Magic Reservoir

The Lake

Magic Reservoir is one of the most intensely fished lakes in Idaho. The nutrient rich waters allow the Trout to double in size in one summer. Fishing is good from the bank or trolling from a boat.

Magic covers 14,000 acres.

The water levels fluctuate according to snow levels and irrigation demands. Sometimes the lake is almost dry by fall.

Magic is a great ice fishing destination. Fishing is open year round.

Magic Reservoir is about 20 miles North of Shoshone on Highway 75. Follow the signs.

The Fish

Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Yellow Perch.

Trout - Worms and marshmallow from the bank. Drag anything around from your boat to catch fish.

Perch - Fish the South end and West end shallows and flats.

I fished Magic yesterday for the first time this year. It still had some broken ice last week, but no sign of any ice yesterday.

Location: Myrtle Point (low water boat ramp) started fishing about 10:15 A.M. Weather: 55F warming to 70F in the afternoon, occasional light breeze (5-10mph)ese shifting to wsw clear skys and mostly calm water. A front came through two days ago.

I was fishing from the dock at the ramp and using an 18 inch leader with a small light blue and gray hook float, #8 barbless hook and a night crawler for bait. I missed 3 caught 6 total and released 2 all rainbow trout. Two of the four I kept were 10" planters, the other two were large (one 20" and one at 17") ight beautiful, pink meated fish.

There were three people fishing from the shore about 100 feet north of me that limited out with comparable assortment of fish. There was one guy in the area fly fishing from a small, one man pontoon raft only catching a few 8-10 inch fish.

They quit biting about 2:00 P.M. I didn't fish the evening. Hope this helps anyone considering Magic Reservoir.
Good Luck, Jay

Went to magic today. The wind was howling but had a great catch. Three 15" rainbows in less than an hour! Only used a worm and 2 marshmallows. No one else on the banks were catching trout, only the annoying perch that love to steal your bait.
My husband and I got there at 10:30 in the am and stayed until 2:30. The Rainbow were still biting, but we were cold and had quite a drive to get home.
Boaters were still able to get into the water at Myrtle Point launch but were not catching anything. The water was quite rough due to the wind gusts.

The perch were biting hard, but you could barely feel the rainbows on the hook. The water is really low but you don't need a boat as we found today. Other people fishing on the banks were very friendly! A great day out! I would definitely bring some sort of wind break. Maybe an umbrella or tarp attached to steaks inserted into the ground. The wind was cold, but if you had a windbreak, it was great!

Trolled with pop gear and wedding ring tipped with worm to good success from 8:30am to 2:00pm for fat rainbows. Beautiful day until storm blew in and scrambled us off the water. Between two of us we landed 25 healthy rainbows. The largest was about 20 inches and 3 lbs.

Had heard trolling rapalas or wooly buggers was good but had no success with those. Fish were rising and jumping the whole time we were there. Overall, I was very pleased with Magic!

Ice fishing is fair for rainbows. The ice is 12 to 14 inches thick. The perch catching is slow.

3/12/05
Still catching rainbows thru the ice. Ice still about a foot thick.

The ice has melted and is on its way to the ocean. The fishing for trout is good! Get a limit.

Fishing Tip for Magic Reservoir.
Well, they bite on worms in carey lagoon. Use a bobber and put the distance from bobber to sinkers 4 feet and watch your bobber go everywhere

Fishing Report:
Fished for three days and caught 4 trout, (2) 14" and (2) 18" used worm & marshmallow, power bait, corn, mealworm, and jigged lures with powerbait. All other fisherman were catching trout only. Talked to a few guys that were fishing mainly for perch, but the perch could not be found. When the sun was out the bite seemed to be better than when it started snowing.

Magic Reservoir Fishing Report.

A week ago, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10th. & 11th., my 3 sons, 3 grandsons (ages 6 through 8) and I went ice fishing on Magic Reservoir. The fishing was slow but we had a great time. We were fishing out from West Magic Resort and had lots of company, especially on Saturday. The ice was very thick and those without power augers had to work hard to open up a few holes.

The perch fishing was completely dead and we didn't see any caught. Two conservation officers, checking licenses, said that one guy, who was fishing off of the east bank across from us, had caught 5, 12 inch perch in the morning. These were the only perch that they had seen. The officers had put in with their snowmobiles close to the dam and came up the lake. They said that no one was fishing close to the dam.

We caught 19 trout over the two day period with about 18 to 25 rods out and about 12 to 14 hours of fishing. The fish were in excellent condition and very good eating. They were fat Rainbows and from about 12 to 16 inches. We caught more fish than those around us but had a lot more rods out.

We did talk to a local fisherman and he said they had caught a 3 1/2 lb. Rainbow in the middle of the lake on Friday. He also said that, a couple of weeks earlier, the perch fishing had been excellent. He told us that people, fishing close to the island out from the resort, had caught some 5 lb. Browns a week or two before.
