The landlocked Atlantic Salmon, salmo salar, is generally the same fish as the
sea run salmon of the Atlantic ocean. The landlocked Atlantic Salmon
spawns in freshwater streams and returns to a lake rather than
the ocean. When the fry are hatched they also return to the lake to live.
The Atlantic Salmon was stocked in a few Idaho lakes to help keep
Kokanee populations in check. They are a good sport fish in their own right.
A 13 lb. 6 oz. fish was caught at Deadwood Reservoir in 1995, by Garrett Buffington.
There were reportedly
some Atlantics stocked into Lucky Peak at some time in the past but not much
has been heard from them lately. The Idaho Fish and Game does not currently
have a stocking program for these fish.
Chinook Salmon
The landlocked Chinook Salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha,
has been planted in Lake Coure d' Alene, Deadwood,
and Anderson Ranch Reservoir to feed on excess Kokanee.
The Idaho record landlocked Chinook is a 42 pounder from Lake Coure d' Alene,
reeled in by Jane Clifford in 1982.
Coho Salmon
Coho Salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch,
landlocked version. The Coho is a native fish in Idaho. It ran to the sea
but disappeared forever from Idaho steams in the wild version in 1986.
It is now stocked and is a landlocked sport fish in Idaho's lakes.
This fish can be
found in Cascade Reservoir and Island Park Reservoir.
