Gerrard Rainbow

The Gerrard Rainbow is a wild strain of Rainbow that originated in the
waters of Kootenay Lake in British Columbia, Canada. The Gerrard can
grow quickly with a good food base, such as Kokanee, and will grow quite large
mainly because they can live a long time. These fish are happy in the cold waters
of deep lakes and can spawn successfully in the wild. We can fish for
these great game fish in Lake Pend Oreille in Northern Idaho.
The Idaho state record, and the world record as well,
is a 37 lb. 5 oz. lunker caught in 1947 by Wess Hamlet
from Lake Pend Oreille.
The Gerrard Rainbow starts out like all trout eating zooplankton and mysis shrimp
and as it gains in size it is able to chase the small trout or Kokanee salmon.
It becomes a voracious predator and begins to grow quickly.

Kamloops Fishing Tip
Kamloops are mostly caught at Pend Oreille by trolling.
Streamer flys are extremely popular, tied on a 4/0 hook with a 2/0 trailing hook.
Blue, gray, green, and brown colors are good. Troll with a flasher or dodger.
Planer boards are used while on the surface because the fish spook when the boat
travels over them. Run the planers out as far as you can, up to 150 feet.
Trail the boards by another 100 to 200 feet with your lures.
Black and white Apex lures in the 4 to 6 inch sizes are also effective.
In the winter and spring troll on the surface
for great action on 8 to 12 pounders with the occasional 20 pound trophy.
In the spring the big ones are swimming up the streams to spawn, and so are
not in the lake to find your lure.
When the water warms up us a downrigger or lead core line to get down 30
to 70 feet.
Trolling speeds are in the fast range, 2 1/2 to 3 mph.
